I want lots of things, these are some of them

I would like to be a photographer.

I would like to walk around with a nice big camera on a strap over my shoulder, I don't care which camera, so long as it looks the part. Some of my favourite pictures were taken with a little 8-pixel camera, so I have few ambitions for technology. And not a flowery trendy strap, just something black and comfortable.

I would like to have photoshop. Yes, I admit it. I enjoy layering story into pictures.

I would like to write a novel based on a series of my own photographs.

I am very tempted.

Can you imagine the story? (Maybe something like this story, which I have been wanting to write for a couple of years now.)

I would like someone to drive me into the hills so I could take photographs.

(No, I wouldn't like to drive myself. I'd like to be driven, because that is safer trust me, I am too drifty and unmathematical for driving any great distance. We listen to music, and I put my bare feet up on the dashboard, smile behind my sunglasses, and talk to my kid in the back seat whenever I want. And there are surfboards tied to the roof, of course.)

And while everyone else is surfing I am wandering and dreaming, and no one minds.

And I don't wear shoes, and I don't worry about getting dirty feet.

And then we just don't want to go home, so we lie on the cooling sand beneath a million stars that will be us one day, our cells turned to fire, our souls luminous to other dreamers with hair wet from surfing, and cameras full of stories, and hearts resonant in the star-blessed darkness.

I would like this.

  1. I usually don't like pictures AND story, I find either the story was not what I saw in the picture, or the picture is not what I saw in the story. (I dislike the picture covers of most books, and don't get me started on books they turn into TV or movies ....arrrrghhhh!!)
That said, you are one of the closest I know with the talent to meld the two. I don't know if it is your visually evocative words or your story laden photography. But I love the idea of a written story from your images. I have the feeling you are a rarity that could do the idea justice.

    1. I get where you're coming from. Book covers are really important to me, they very much influence how I experience the book (for better or worse ... so often worse.) And I agree with you about books into movies. I've only liked a couple.

Thank you for your kind words.

  2. You ARE a photographer, friend. The camera doesn't make the photographer - it's the heart. You see life in pictures, and you can use any tool to make them.

Also, have you looked at Adobe Elements? It's not as tricked out as Photoshop, but you can do some fun things there! I think you would love it.

  4. Yes, what Kelly said...you are a photographer, a very good one! I too want Photoshop. I think a novel that's based on your photographs sounds like a great idea.

  5. Dear Universe,
It's evening. There in the sky is the first star. I am closing my eyes and wishing now for an:
impressive looking camera, with a plain black camera strap, and Photoshop
for my photographer/writer friend Sarah, who is going to do something magical with them (I promise). She is a magician with both words and pictures.
    Let it be so.

    1. Susan, you are such a honey :-) Oh, but there are a hundred things I need more than a camera! By the way, you sound awfully witchy there ;-)

  8. i wish all of this for you too.
as long as you know, like Kelly said, that you are already a photographer. the camera does not make the eye or the passion.
(i have photoshop, but must admit that most of my images are simply edited in the free picasa.)
